Underwriting Solutions to Dynamic Industry - A Brief History

Hospitality Industries Underwriting Consultants (Pty) Ltd (HIU) was established in 1998 as a joint venture between Allianz Insurance Company Ltd. (Allianz) and Lireas Holdings (Pty) Ltd (Lireas Holdings are a subsidiary of Hannover Re Africa Limited), after identifying the scope and demand for structured asset protection and risk management solutions to all the many segments comprising the Hospitality Industry.

In 2001, following the withdrawal of Allianz from the South African insurance market, HIU and Lireas entered into a partnership with Santam Insurance Ltd,. The partnership enjoyed great success until early 2004 when, as a result of strategic shareholding transactions, between Santam and Lireas, Compass Insurance Company (Pty) Ltd. (also a subsidiary of Hannover Re Africa Limited) became the risk carrier for HIU.

In 2007, HIU saw a new shareholding partner in the form of SUM Holdings (Pty) Ltd, the shareholders of which are Rory Gainsford and Lireas Holdings (Pty) Ltd headed by Val Hayter. In January 2009 Denleigh Wilensky, Executive Director of HIU, became a shareholder.

In 2010 HIU expanded into all areas of the general commercial and industrial underwriting arena – in addition to our specialist hospitality underwriting business. As a direct result of the decision to expand our offering, HIU had to seek another risk carrier therefore with effect from 1 January 2010, HIU (both the hospitality and the commercial and industrial business) began underwriting through Guardrisk.
